Double the Cuphead: Studio MDHR Announces Sequel and Retro Spin-Off

Studio MDHR is doubling down on their signature hand-drawn chaos. At Summer Game Fest, the developer announced two new projects: a direct, hand-animated sequel to Cuphead and a separate retro spin-off titled Mighty Cuphead Adventure.

This is a massive treat for players who love gorgeous art and brutal difficulty.

Two Flavors of Brutal Platforming

Studio MDHR is expanding the Cuphead universe in two very different directions:

  • The Direct Sequel: Work has officially begun on the next mainline, hand-animated Cuphead title, promising the same legendary level of visual detail and challenging boss fights.
  • Mighty Cuphead Adventure: A separate project styled as an 8-bit retro action platformer, offering a different style of classic side-scrolling gameplay.
  • Development Status: Both projects are early in development, with release dates to be announced.

The Verdict: More Pain, More Gain

Cuphead remains one of the greatest indie achievements in gaming history. While fans have been waiting for news since the DLC wrapped up, getting a double reveal is a brilliant surprise.

The 8-bit spin-off will be a fun nostalgia trip, but the mainline sequel is the real draw. Yes, it will take years to animate, and yes, it will break many controllers, but it will be worth every second.
