The Knights of Doom Assemble: State of Play Delivers

Sony’s State of Play broadcast just blew the roof off the fighting game community. We already knew that the masters of 2.5D fighting games, Arc System Works, were developing MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. But the latest trailer just confirmed that three of the most iconic villains in comic book history are joining the launch roster when the game drops on August 6, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC.

Grab a beverage, sit down, and let me tell you how it is.

Riot Games and Capcom are not the only ones making noise today. The new trailer officially unveiled Magneto, the Green Goblin, and Carnage as playable fighters. Together with team leader Doctor Doom, they form a faction known as the "Knights of Doom." Along with the character reveals, Arc System Works showed off their home stage: a gorgeous, rain-slicked Night variant of Marvel's New York.

The Villainous Roster: Gliders, Claws, and Magnetic Might

Each of these three newly announced villains brings a completely distinct gameplay archetype to the table, showcasing Arc System Works' signature mechanical creativity.

Magneto: The Master of Magnetism

Magneto is designed as the ultimate spatial control character, utilizing his magnetic powers to dictate the pace of the match. The trailer showed him levitating above the ground and hurling massive metal debris at his opponents from a distance. If you try to run away, he can pull you in; if you get too close, he can push you away. He looks like a zoner's dream and a rushdown player's worst nightmare.

Green Goblin: High-Flying Havoc

Green Goblin is all about high-speed, aerial mobility. Norman Osborn spends almost the entire match mounted on his signature glider, letting him zoom across the screen at angles that will make your head spin. He controls the sky, raining down chaos with explosive Pumpkin Bombs and tracking Razor Bats. If you do not have solid anti-air options, the Goblin is going to run circles around you.

Carnage: Symbiote Aggression

Carnage represents pure, unadulterated aggression. His playstyle is built around close-quarters combat, utilizing his morphing symbiote tentacles to slash and stab. Crucially, Carnage features an "infection" mechanic where his attacks can plague opponents, draining their health and buffing his own speed and damage. He is the ultimate rushdown character for players who want to press buttons and never let go.

Why Arc System Works is the Perfect Fit

Having Arc System Works develop a Marvel fighting game is the best-case scenario for the fighting game community. This is the studio behind mechanical masterpieces like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive. They are the undisputed kings of flashy, high-fidelity visual styling and deep, complex fighting systems.

With MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls scheduled for launch on August 6, 2026, the summer fighting game season is shaping up to be an absolute bloodbath. Capcom, Riot, and Bandai Namco have officially been put on notice. The villains are taking over, and they are doing it with style.
