Bungie is not playing around with their extraction shooter. On June 2, 2026, Marathon drops its second major season: Nightfall. If you thought your runs in the Dire Marsh were tense before, wait until you have to navigate them in pitch-black darkness.

Whether you are a seasoned veteran looking for a fresh challenge or a new player curious to see what all the hype is about, this season is shaping up to be an absolute game-changer. Let's break down everything coming in Nightfall, from terrifying new zones to defensive Runner shells and complete progression overhauls.

Welcome to the Night Marsh: Survival in the Dark

The biggest headline for Season 2 is the introduction of the Night Marsh.

This is not just a simple night-time cosmetic swap of the existing Dire Marsh map. Bungie is leaning heavily into horror elements here. The Night Marsh is shrouded in thick, oppressive darkness that introduces entirely new gameplay mechanics. You cannot just run and gun: you need to see where you are going.

To survive, you will need to rely on specialized low-light gear:

  • Flashlights: Great for spotting enemies, but they act as a massive beacon pointing directly to your location. Use with caution.
  • Night-Vision Scopes: Perfect for long-range targeting in the dark, but they limit your peripheral vision.
  • Signal Flares: Useful for illuminating wide areas or disorienting opposing Runners.

The environment itself is a threat now, and navigating the swamp under these conditions is going to test even the most experienced crews.

Meet the Sentinel: The Defensive Powerhouse

A new season means a new Runner Shell, and this one is all about protecting the squad. Say hello to The Sentinel.

The Sentinel is a defensive-minded shell built to lock down zones and keep teammates alive under heavy fire. Its signature ability is a deployable laser platform that automatically intercepts incoming enemy missiles and grenades. If you have ever been wiped out by a random grenade spam at an extraction point, the Sentinel is your answer.

In addition to projectile defense, the Sentinel provides active stat buffs to nearby crewmates, making it an essential anchor for any squad looking to survive high-tier extractions.

The Cradle: A Complete Progression Overhaul

Bungie listened to player feedback from Season 1 and decided to completely rebuild how progression works. The old structure is gone, replaced by a much more intuitive system called The Cradle.

Under this new system, players will earn points that they can freely distribute across six core categories, including Dexterity. This allows you to customize your stats and tailor builds to your exact playstyle. Whether you want to build a speedy scout or a heavily armored tank, the Cradle gives you the freedom to do so without the convoluted roadblocks of the past.

Meta Shift: The KKV-9SD and Vault Changes

Tired of shotgun players rushing you down? Bungie has a solution. Season 2 introduces the KKV-9SD, a pistol-frame SMG specifically engineered to act as a counter to close-range shotgun meta. It features a high rate of fire and excellent hip-fire accuracy, giving you the mobility to outmaneuver and outshoot shotgun rushers in tight corridors.

Bungie is also delivering several quality-of-life upgrades, including:

  • Expanded Vault Space: More room for your prized loot.
  • Faster Faction Progression: Less grind, quicker rewards.
  • Improved Contracts: Better payouts for your successful runs.

The Big Reset and Free Open Play Week

To ensure a level playing field, Season 2 begins with a full seasonal reset. All player vaults and configurations will be cleared, giving everyone a fresh start in the Night Marsh. However, Season 1 players will not walk away empty-handed: you will receive CyberAcme Sponsored Kits as compensation based on your previous Runner Level.

During this week, the full game will be completely free to play across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
